Citadel is an upcoming and highly anticipated science fiction action spy thriller television series created by David Weil with the Russo Brothers acting as Executive Producers for Amazon Prime Video. The Series Stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden as Citadel Agents Nadia Sinh and Mason Kane.
The program is said to as “an expansive and groundbreaking global event comprising a mothership series and several local language satellite series” and an “action-packed spy series with a compelling emotional center”. There are spin-offs set in Mexico, India, Spain, and the Italian Alps.
Citadel is an ambitious project whose seeds were planted by Amazon Studios chief Jennifer Salke who approached the Russo Brothers and their independent studio AGBO about creating this global spy show in mid-2018. Initially, the series was a partnership between AGBO and screenwriting collective Midnight Radio consisting of Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec but they parted ways in 2021 during production due to creative differences and David Weil’s takeover as the new showrunner. This resulted in extensive reshoots and delays in release.
As of 2023, Citadel is the second most expensive series of all time with a budget of US$300 million including the extensive reshoots which took place after David Weil was hired.
The plot of the series revolves around Mason Kane and Nadia Sinh, whose memories were wiped out eight years before when Citadel the independent global spy organisation was destroyed by the operatives of the Manticore. Eight years after Citadel fell, a former colleague of Mason from Citadel tracks him down and asks for his help desperately to prevent Manticore from establishing a new world order. Mason seeks out his old partner Nadia and the mission takes them on a journey of secrets, lies, love and danger.
In March 2023, the series was renewed for a second season while the first two episodes of season one are set to premier on the 28th of April. The series will include spinoffs in different countries and languages. There will be international and multilingual spinoffs for the series. Raj & DK will helm the Indian television series, which features Varun Dhawan and Samantha Ruth Prabhu. Amazon Studios and Cattleya, a division of ITV Studios will jointly create the Italian television series.
The Promotions of the series have started in India as well as globally with the team of Citadel and Amazon Prime Video.
